Opening Line: “Today seemed like the perfect day to go to jail.”
Overall: This book is about a couple, Shante & Dorian, who have been married one year. For their Anniversary, Shante suggests to her husband Dorian that they have a no-questions-asked-Free Hall Pass. Dorian being a man …. of course he can’t say no to that offer. He can sleep with whom ever he wants to, so then he makes his second dumb mistake, and chooses Shante’s sexy, younger sister Reagan. Reagan is a wild-woman who sleeps around and has no steady job. Her and Dorian have the Hall Pass night of hot sex. But, of course, now that Dorian was able to cheat and sleep with her, one night is just not going to be enough. They start sneaking around having a full-blown affair. Soon, Dorian becomes so obsessed with the sizzling affair that he can’t think straight anymore. Reagan seems mentally unstable and starts causing lots of trouble and complications in Dorian’s perfect life. Of course, all that cheating and hot sex make things in all of their lives entangled, messy, stressful and complicated.
Ovations: I first noticed this book because of the beautiful cover! Then, I read the fantastic opening line and I had to buy the book! Being a woman who is married myself, this story was interesting right from the beginning. (Because who hasn’t thought about if you &/or your hubby had a Free Hall Pass?!) The book is drama -filled and suspenseful and really keeps you reading to find out what happens next. I think it would make a good movie! Lastly, I loved all the plot twists at the end that I did not see coming at all.
Oh Well: The issue I had with this book right off the bat was the whole idea that a woman, married only one year, who has a husband who used to cheat on her before they got married, would ever offer her husband a free chance to cheat on her when everything seemed to be going well in their marriage so far. So, right away as I was reading it, I was thinking, “This is not realistic or reasonable for her to do.” (PS: Her husband should have been thinking that too!) Another issue I had with this book was the many twists at the end of the book. I felt like some of the twists were believable and some just were not.
Opinion: This book was very hard to categorize. It was part drama, part hot sex, part cautionary tale. But, it definitely was not a lovey-dovey romance. You just have to enjoy this book for what it is, a sexy, soap-opera, roller coaster ride, marriage drama full of twists and turns. Rating: 6 out of 10
